In order to be a leader in a pack, you must know the heirarchy and know what to do when confronted by a superior wolf to yourself. Here you will find a detailed description of each position in a pack as well as the rules for gaining ranks. They are from Highest in the pack to the Lowest.
Alpha/Alphess[/u]
These are the leaders of the packs. The are sometimes the only ones to mate, though it is not uncommon otherwise. They hold their tails high in the air, a sign of dominance. The Alpha is the leader of the pack, they try their best to keep up with the going ons within the pack. They see each of the pack members as family and make important decisions that reflect the growth and welfare of the pack. Their word is what goes and those who defy it may find themselves facing a horrible fate. There is only one pair of Alpha's per pack. All alpha's SHOULD have a mate, though this is not a solid requirement.
****Note****
You may not hold two alpha positions within the same pack.
Beta's[/u]
The Beta wolf is the second ranking individual within the dominance hierarchy. They show commitment and loyalty to the pack, also acting as a discipliner to reinforce the Alpha's decisions. There are usually 1 or two per pack. They are the next in line for the leadership if something were to happen to the Alpha, unless defeated by a subordinate wolf during a fight for the Alpha position.
****Note****
You may not hold two beta positions within a pack.
You may not hold an alpha and a beta position in a pack.
Basically, one leadership position per pack.
Gammas[/u]
These wolves are one step below the Beta's. There is usually one set per pack. They enforce any rules that are previously set by their superiors. They are usually the wolves that stay behind when the pack goes out to hunt. They are the babysitters of the pups during Mating Season.
Subordinates[/u]
These wolves are 'just there' but are also accepted in to the pack. They have no special rank, and this is the rank which is normally given to someone who has just joined the pack. There are an unlimited amount of them within a pack.
Omega[/u]
This is the lowest rank you can be within a pack. Much of the time, when a pack does a Chorus howl, this wolf will be punished for joining in. There are an unlimited number of wolves in this rank and they tend to be picked on much of the time.
Loner[/u]
A loner is a wolf that doesn't belong in any pack. Should they cross onto a packland, they could end up being in grave danger, unless they prove no harm to the Alpha's of the land. Any disrespect shown could get them killed.
