Mushrooms were odd things. They could be deliciously squishy and tasty or hard and disgusting with mould growing off them. The trouble was, you could never tell just by looking at them what the truly awesome and delectable mushrooms were. Unfortunately for most of the time, you had to try it to test it out. And most of the time the mushrooms weren't very nice after all. Only occasionally did you hit the big time with the real tasty mushrooms.
Xeno had figured out a little trick that he hoped would ensure successful finding of the good mushrooms that would avoid any close encounters with all the bad and yucky kinds. The yucky mushrooms seemed to like to grow in dark, damp, mossy, green, woody and warm places, so if you cross all those places out that should be where the good mushrooms grow!
Unfortunately it isn't that simple, because that left only the gritty surfaces in direct sunlight, and things in direct sunlight had a habit of being trampled by the various wildlife that frequently ran through the forest of Toko. But still, Xeno had a system, and as soon as he saw a group of potential good mushrooms in the hypothetical spot, he would test his system out.
Sitting underneath a dying sapling now in the freezing cold, his wings humming every now and then to warm the air up around him, Xeno came to a stunning and dissapointing conclusion. It seemed that the good mushrooms also didn't grow in the winter, so he was out of luck. Still, spring was just around the corner, and as he sat here, a small plume of hot air cascading from his tiny mouth, he was filled with enthusiasm for the mushrooms he would find and consume in the spring, and what a happy time that would soon be.
