Cindershock stood atop the great falls of her home, she could see for miles up here. She stared out across the lands of Fukai and her eyes lit up in wonderment. She saw the outcroping of waterfalls where she and Zephyr fell in love. She saw the trees where most of the packs food came from. She saw it all with her violent purple eyes. Her red fur burned like a wild fire through the woods. And with her head held high, with her family, and mate close by, she felt as if she could conquer the world.
She looked down to the ground where the waterfalls water pooled and felt the childish urge to jump in. She closed her eyes, backed up, and jumped, satisfying the urge and howling a song as she went in. Her head submerged in the water, and she came up panting. Her paws churned the water swimming towards the bank. She waded out and looked down at the once clear water closest to dry land where her paws ahd stirred up the mud beneath it. That was a lot more satisfying than I thought it would be she thought looking around hoping no one saw her moment of weakness.
She shook her pelt, heavy from being so waterlogged, and water flew everywhere. She pranced towards the entrance to there den, a cave hidden byt he roaring falls that had given her pack their name. She made her way over the narrow, slippery stone walkway and into the cool den. She looked over to the nests and saw alot of wolves napping, she looked over to the opposite side and walked over laying down and licking some of the water off of herself. Cinder hoped the new pup, Snippet would come in she was eager to meet her.

”Come on, Snippet!” The young black pup looked over his shoulder as he bounced away from her, his muzzle open in a hearty laugh. Snippet raced after him, loving the feeling of the ground beneath her paws and the wind in her fur. Zakky’d caught the scent of a rabbit and called for her to follow him. Neither one of them was old enough to catch it, and they both knew it, but they were going to have fun chasing it anyway. Zakky was older than her by three months, but they were still like siblings anyway, and of the three older pups it was always he who made a point to include her in their games. This rabbitstalking, though, had always been just for Snip and Zakky. It was their special game.
Snip caught up with Zakky and the two of them crouched, muzzles up as they scented the breeze. The rabbit was nearby. Zakky looked at Snip and jerked his head, motioning for her to follow him. She nodded. As they got up, though, Snip’s legs suddenly felt heavy, and she walked slower and slower until she couldn’t keep up with Zakky anymore. She called out to him but he didn’t hear her; he just padded away and all she could do was watch…
Snippet woke up with a whimper, shaking her head to clear the fog of her lingering dream. Of all the members of her old pack, she dreamt of Zakky the most, more even than her parents. She’d felt very close to the pup; they’d pledged to always stick together, no matter what happened to them. And then he’d just left her behind, in the dead of winter, along with the other two older pups…Snip shook her head again, not wanting to go there. She would never understand just why Zakky left her with the others, but she would always wonder.
Snip raised her head, smelling the constant scent of water that hung in the air around the Fukai den. She was thirsty after sleeping for so long; she’d collapsed the day before after exploring with Riptide all day. Deciding to get a drink, she started to rise but found she couldn’t move her legs; after a moment of panic she realized Riptide had rolled over on her sometime during the night. Chuckling, the young wolf tugged her legs free and padded over to the mouth of the den.
She was so intent on the water that she was tight next to the wolf before she realized she had company. At first, she only glanced over, hoping she hadn’t been noticed. Then she realized who she was looking at. She’d never met her Alphess in person before, but she’d seen the bright red coat from a distance before. Her eyes widened as she realized she was standing before Cindershock. Standing! Before her Alphess!
Snippet dropped to the ground without making eye contact. Her tail curled up tight to her belly and her whole body trembled in fear. She pressed herself to the ground, her tongue licking out nervously. She put her head between her paws and tried to make herself as small as possible. ”Cindershock, ma’am, I didn’t see you there, I’m sorry ma’am,” she mumbled nervously.

Cinder, upon hearing Snippet's whimper abrubtly stood up and started towards her. Stopping only because she didn't want to frighten the pup further, she sat herself on the cool rock and waited with a worried expression. She waited a moment and saw that the pup had relized she was stuck under Riptide, her foster father. She hoped he was treating her right, and that the pups responsibilty would take his mind off of losing two faes as potential mates.
She layed herself down, so that she was lower to the ground and smaller, in case she scared the little one. Sheset s small smile upon her face a waited for the pup to notice her.
She seemed so focused on what she was doing, that Cinder was not sure that the pup would notice her lying on the ground. Cinder saw the pup look up and then she was sure she owuld have been seen, and then the pup dropped to the ground as if she had been attacked, or was haveing a seizure or something.
Cinder darted up and darted to the pup. She sniffed all around her and when finding out the pup was not having some retardation of the brain, and was just shivering in fear Cinder's mouth dropped open in shock.
She had never seen another wolf react as badly to a dominate wolf, or her for that matter before. It shocked her. And made her a little sad that this little wolfwas so scared of her. "It's okay little one, no need to fear me. You don't have to apologize, you were doing nothing wrong sweetheart." She said sweetly smiling at her comfortingly.

At first, Snippet couldn’t understand for the life of her what Cindershock was doing. When she dropped out of shock and fear at finding herself so close to the Alphess without realizing it or showing proper submission, the older wolf ran over to her! She cringed, thinking she was going to be punished for walking up to her so boldly, but all the crimson wolf did was sniff her over curiously. Snip held rock-still, fearing to interrupt or offend the other wolf. She didn’t look up at her but kept her golden eyes fixed on the ground. The air from Cindershock’s examination ruffled Snippet’s fur, tickling her, but she didn’t dare even squirm. She was too intent on staying still to really notice it anyway.
When Cinder spoke to her, Snip darted a shocked glance at her face before looking down again. It didn’t make any sense to her that the Alphess would be so kind to her; she was a new member, another mouth to feed and not born into the pack. The only redeeming quality she brought with her was her healing talent; she wasn’t even old enough to hunt well yet. Plus, she was a subordinate, not anywhere near the level of an Alphess. So why was Cindershock treating her like a daughter almost? Confused, Snippet looked up briefly into the purple eyes that regarded her with concern. The thick dark rings around her light golden eyes lent her a rather lost air that reflected the confusion in her expression. She didn’t hold the other gaze long, but dropped her eyes for fear of seeming impertinent.
She rose slowly, her tail still hovering up between her legs and her ears back against her head. She licked her muzzle. ”Thank you, Cindershock, ma’am,” she said quietly. ”I mean, and thank you for letting me stay with the pack.” She looked up finally, the expression in her eyes somewhere between earnest and pleading. ”I know I’m not much use around yet, but I think if you hadn’t let Papa Tide keep me here, I wouldn’t have made it much longer.” She scuffed the ground shyly with a paw.
The night Riptide found her would always be a vivid image burned in her memory. She’d been almost dead when he found her in the snow, cold beyond shivering and nothing but skin and ribs. Only his body heat saved the barely six-month-old pup that night; he laid with her until the morning, when he brought her back to the Fukai dens on his back- there was no way she could stand by that point- and stayed with her there. She’d sort of imprinted on the older wolf, and soon she refused to leave his side. For more than a month she panicked when he was out of her sight for even a moment; she knew the Alpha pair had excused him from hunting to take care of her and she still felt bad about that. Her reaction hadn’t been in her control, though; at that point in her life, she was severely traumatized after having watched all of her pack members but three die, those three who then abandoned her to the winter, and Riptide was the only wolf who still cared about her. Even now, almost six months later, with Snippet fully recovered physically but still mentally withdrawn and fearful, he was the only wolf she felt safe with. He could, however, go out on his own without Snippet freaking out. It made her nervous, though, to be so close to her Alphess; she was overly aware of her pack rank and thought she didn’t have the right to talk to the leader of her new pack.

Cinder couldn't understand why the little pup cowered in fear of her, was she really that scary? No wolf had ever done this before. It made her feel like a monster, a big scary monster, that deserved to be feared, the fae didn't like the feeling. She locked over Snippet's head comfortingly, and smiled. Cinder drew her red paw over her muzzle wiping away invisible dirt.
The pup seemed shocked to here her voice as she spoke the words, as if she had never heard someone as dominant as herself (not the she considered herself dominant.) speak. Cinder thought of herself as a regular wolf all the time, unless something had to be done, then she and Zephyr would take care of it.
It was odd to get such respect, such respect that the little wolfs tail was tucked to her tummy in submission. Cindershock cocked her head to the side trying to understand the faes feelings. Had Riptide told her to respect her? To fear her? She didn't think that the brute would say something like that, but other than that, she could think of nothing to make the pup act like this.
Cinder said nothing in reply for a while, baffled speechless by the young ones behavior. She shook her head, "No problem at all, it's no inconvenience! Your a sweet little pup, and I am glad to have you in the pack! Your family now," the alphess said smiling. "Ahhh, yes. I know the story," she smiled, "Riptide tells it all the time, he is so proud of you for surviving as long as you did, he really does love you, you know" she said conspiratorially, as if Tide didn't know himself.
She couldn't believe the pup thought herself useful, with her healing talent she would be plenty of use in the future. Not that she cared, if the pup had no talent at all she would still think the same. Fukai would never turn away a wolf. Old and sick, or young and healthy, all were welcome into their pack, provided that they didn't have evil intentions.

Snippet kept darting nervous glances up at Cindershock, wanting to look at the older wolf but afraid of making eye contact. The Alphess wasn’t acting at all like Snip had expected. The crimson fae was looking at the pup with concern and affection, as though she was trying to figure out if something was wrong. The soft smile on her face confused the younger wolf, as kindness wasn’t something she was accustomed to of late. Since joining the pack, it’d once again become part of her life, but the tragedy she’d lived through was not so easily forgotten.
Cinder seemed somewhat uncomfortable, wiping a paw across her muzzle in what could almost be described as a nervous gesture. Snip wondered if she’d done something wrong to make the Alphess unsure of herself. She was only doing what instinct and upbringing led her to do- submitting to a high-ranking wolf and showing proper respect. And if there was an unhealthy amount of fear in there, it wasn’t really her fault. Her life had taught her that other wolves did not often have any true good intentions in their hearts, and her shy nature worked against her to reinforce that belief and turn it into cowering submission and a rather violent reaction to older wolves. The fact that she was in a new pack with only Riptide’s support to keep her there- or so she thought- didn’t help any.
Such was her mindset that Cinder’s reassuring words came as a surprise to the young pup. She sat down with a quiet thump, looking up with wondering eyes at the crimson wolf’s smiling face. She hadn’t expected this at all. Papa Tide’d welcomed her into his life as a daughter, and Snip would never be able to thank him enough for that, but she didn’t expect the same from any of the other wolves in the pack. To them, she assumed she was just another body in the den, tolerated but not really looked at with anything but indifference. To get such straightforward acceptance from the Alphess, to be called family, as if she really had a family again…the little wolf was overwhelmed by it all. However, the implications were clear to her subconscious mind at least, because her ears pricked forward a bit and her tail relaxed, even giving a tentative wag.
When she answered, her voice was still very shy, but the outright fear was no longer present. Now she sounded more at peace, and maybe even hopeful. ”Thank you, Cindershock ma’am, it’s been a while since I had my own family.” Cinder probably wouldn’t understand that comment; it was common knowledge how Snip had come to the pack but no one, not even Tide, knew where she’d come from. She wasn’t ready to talk about it yet. The little wolf blushed. ”I don’t know how I made it so long, ma’am; it was really cold and I was too little to hunt.” She still was, but that was beside the point. Snip looked up again, her eyes filled with something gentle and unexpectedly sweet. ”You have beautiful packlands, ma’am; Papa Tide takes me exploring with him sometimes. I don’t know a lot of wolves here yet, but I like it here.” The ghost of a smile tugged at the pup’s lips, the first time that expression had come there since the day before.

The red fae gazed at the young wolf, she saw her body muscles tightened with stress, fear, and tension, her eyes, confused and wondering, and her tail tucked between her legs in a submissive gesture. The alphess just took in all about this pup. She cocked her head to the side, trying to understand and walk in Snippet’s paw prints, to see if she could figure out why she had this unhealthy amount of fear in her for high-ranking wolves. She tried to figure it out, and failed. She would ask Riptide about it, maybe he knew, though at times she could see him too, submitting to her or Zephyr. It confused her, were they brought up to be like that? She wasn’t but then again she was left on her own at a very early age, too early to understand the rules within a pack.
She saw the little wolfs tail give a tentative wag and thought she might be opening up to her. Cinder liked to have an open, healthy, and friendly relationship with all her pack. She wanted them to be able to tell her anything, and her the same. “You’ve had some hard times with other wolves haven’t you?”Cindershock’s perceptive nature kicked in, she could tell this little pup had much hurt, caused by others, and it made her angry. “Ooo, if Tide has taken you exploring you haven’t really been yet, nothing can compare to an alphess’s tour, you have to come with me and let me show you all the good places!” She said excitedly. Just thinking of showing this shy, quiet little thing around her lands, made her grin. She liked to think she and Zephyr knew the lands best, but she knew she was probably wrong on her end, though she knew she did know more fun places than Riptide. She tilted her head to the side once more, in a questioning manner this time, silently asking if the pup trusted her enough to come play.

Snip sat on her haunches, looking up with wide eyes at the Aplhess who towered above her, literally and figuratively. Snip’s small stature made any adult wolf seem huge, even though she herself was done growing. She was just rather below average as far as size went. While this definitely didn’t help the whole ‘intimidated-by-other-wolves’ thing, it was very helpful in remaining unseen. Her small size combined with her dark grey-white-and-black markings helped her bled seamlessly into the shadows as if she were part of them. She found it easy to slip around unseen, unnoticed, which is how she liked it, frankly. In anonymity there was safety, or so she’d discovered through her scant 12 months of life. In the shadows was safety, the only home she’d ever known. Until now.
Snip’s tail was actually wagging now, her ears no longer flat against her skull. She felt all warm inside, the feeling of being accepted into a family more special to her than she could explain. Her tongue hung out of her mouth a little bit, a slightly goofy smile spreading over her features. She started to see Cinder less as an untouchable, unapproachable Alphess and more as…not a mother, exactly, but more as an affectionate aunt or something like that. Now that she thought about it unfazed by fear, she could remember how it felt before her old pack was decimated by the harsh winter. Then, everyone had been related to her, every single one of the wolves her aunt or uncle or cousin. She’d loved that feeling of being in a family, had missed it when she lost it…but now she was gaining it back and she loved that. Her eyes were bright wit happiness when she looked up at Cinder.
When Cinder spoke, though, her ears laid back on her skull for a moment, her tail stopped wagging abruptly as she remembered the death of her pack, the abandonment and betrayal she’d gone through as she was left for dead by her supposed guardians. She looked at the ground for a moment before answering softly, ”My old pack turned into not a nice place to be. Some stuff happened and I ended up in the snow.” Her voice was barely audible. ”I like it here a lot better.” She looked up again and her ears perked, along with her tail.
She saw the change that came over Cinder when she talked about exploring. It seemed like she knew a lot about her territory- she would, of course- and she wanted to take Snip out with her! A few minutes ago, she wouldn’t have believed it, certainly wouldn’t have gone with her, but now…she smiled happily. ”I’d like to go with you,” she said shyly. ”It sounds like fun.”

The red fae sat back on her rump as the pup did, then lowered herself to the ground to make herself seem smaller to the young fae, she was pretty small, and she was done growing from what the alphess could tell. The little one seemed as intimidated as could be, so she didn’t want to make her more nervous than she already was by towering over her. She never did like being looked up to physically, now mentally it made her feel special, but no need to go into that.
The small wolfess’ coloring was perfect for her nature, easy to hide, and blend in just as she wanted to, on the other hand there was Cinder herself, bright orange red with neon purple eyes, what a target! At times Cinder wished she could blend in with the crowd and not be noticed, but she did love her out of place coloring. It fit her, just as Snip’s fit her.
Cindershock literally glowed with happiness when the Snippet started to wag her bushy tail and her ears came up now alert rather than submissive. Her little tongue lolled out of her mouth and Cinder grinned showing her own slightly pink tinged teeth, but not pink enough to be noticed, they looked as white as the crests of waves. Her eyes gleamed and she showed the fae in front of her just how damn happy she was to be accepted into her little circle of wolves she trusted. She knew the pup had been through rough times, and she was glad that she trusted her alphess, and knew that she wasn’t unapproachable, she liked to be there for her pack, and now that Snip trusted her, with her it might be easier.
When Snip’s ears and tail went back to their original position Cinder groaned mentally at her stupidity, why would she bring that up when the little one was just beginning to trust her? She nomed on her lower lip as the Snippet told her short version of the story, just that her packed absolutely sucked and she was abandoned in the snow. It was wrong, and Cinder wished she could go back in time and take Snip as small barley weaned puppy and bring her to Fukai safe and warm without the awful memories she carried in her heart.
“Awesome!” , she prodded Tide with a paw just trying to barley rouse him enough to tell him where his adopted daughter was, “TIDE! I’m taking Snip out on a tour of the lands, mine’ll be better than yours!” laughed a tinkling sound at her teasing and stood motioning with her head to Snippet and started out of the den, glancing behind her to see if she was following her red self.

Snippet’s eyes followed Cinder as she sat down in front of her, the pup’s head dropping visibly as Cinder’s body lowered to her level. Her little shoulders relaxed slightly just with Cinder’s movement- lying down by Snip, she was smaller and therefore less intimidating to the undersized wolf pup. Despite the fact that she was an Alphess and inherently demanding respect, it was hard to be scared of the red wolf when she was making herself small on purpose. Snip tilted her head, processing the fact that the older wolf was actively trying to put her at ease. Though it wasn’t something she was familiar with, she decided she liked the feeling. It was very…happy. It made her feel liked. Her tail wagged a little. Maybe Cinder wasn’t that scary after all.
Snip’s reaction to older wolves, especially Alphas, came from one place- her past pack. The real reason she was so nervous around adult wolves was that the Alpha of her old pack had been a very strict, mean male who insisted that anyone who approached him showed him proper and intense respect. That meant ears back, belly to the floor, tail tucked under as far as it would go. As much as she tried to forget it, Snip could still remember his burning red eyes and the white teeth that flashed in a snarl when he thought someone didn’t show him the proper respect and submission. Many of the other adult in the pack had taken their cue from him and demanded the same. As one of the youngest members, Snip had often taken nips and blows if she didn’t get low fast enough. Even now, after almost ten months away from that pack, Snip couldn’t shake the habits she’d picked up and still saw adults in the same half-fearful way. Cinder, however, was starting to change that for her.
Cindershock’s obviously pleased reaction to the tentative wag of Snip’s tail earned her a surprised look from the shy pup. It didn’t really make sense to her that the Alphess would care whether or not she was happy. She was just a new member of the pack, and a pup at that- Cinder didn’t know her well yet and there was no reason for a real attachment between them. Whether Snip understood it or not, though, Cinder’s big smile was definitely a direct response to Snippet’s tail wagging. She thought quietly to herself about that. Maybe, she decided, Cinder was one of those Alphas who saw every member of their pack as a member of their family. She’d heard from the lone wolves her tiny pack had come across that some Alphas were like that, but she hadn’t really believed it until now. She’d had no reason to. But here was Cinder, treating her like family and happy just because the little pup was. Snip’s shy smile widened and her tail was definitely wagging now. She decide maybe she liked Cindershock.
When Cindershock poked Riptide just enough to wake him up and tell him she was taking Snippet out for a tour, Snip giggled at the way she did it. She pulled Tide’s shoulder like a puppy tugging on her parent’s pelt to get them up in the morning, and then practically stuck her nose in his ear to yell at him and tease him that her tour would be better. Her expression didn’t show it, but the pup was secretly delighted with the Alphess’ behavior. She was acting like a puppy! Snip had never seen a grown wolf act like a puppy before, and she was both fascinated and highly amused by it. She hadn’t known that grown wolves acted like puppies sometimes! And an Alphess at that! With that goofy pounce on Tide, Cinder sealed Snip’s opinion of her- she liked the red-coated Alphess who teased her pack members and was nice to their pups, even the adopted ones.
At Cinder’s move toward the doors, Snip followed on her heels like a second shadow, sticking close enough that she felt safe going past the other napping Fukai members. She was still a little uneasy around other wolves. Once they were outside of the waterfall, however, she took a few prancing half-bounces and caught up with the Alphess. She trotted along beside the older wolf, looking up into her face questioningly. ”Do you always act like a puppy when you’re happy?” she asked shyly. ”I didn’t know big wolves acted like puppies. Where are we going?” As her comfort with the older wolf grew, more and more of her personality came through in the typical one-after-the-other tumble of questions and comments out of her mouth.
