The squirrel was tough and gamey, and little good for eating, but the small sized brute chewed vivaciously upon it anyways, little inspired to do anything else. He was quite content with lazing around the plains, wandering the lands in search of sights and wolves. He was fine on his own.
His 'gift' bothered him little nowadays, almost everything he wanted and needed was right beside him, so he did not find himself drawn to any particular source, which left him free to wander about and do as he wished. Which was perfectly fine for the brown brute.
Lucid's howl, however, once heard, sent violent shivers wracking through Mahli as he dropped the squirrel and lay low to the ground, his paws covering his ears as he heard the Alpha's declaration all too clearly. He whimpered pathetically, his mind desperately trying to deny the facts but in the end he could not.
He was no longer a free wolf. If he did not join Lucid's ranks he would be found and then killed. Could he try to hide? To run away? No such a thought was ridiculous; the plains were his home, always had been and always would be. He would stay, but would he fight? He almost wept for the choice, his heart sinking as he finally realised what it was to be.
He would have to join Lucid. He only prayed that the alpha would allow them to stay in the Kumori Plains; he did not want to leave the lands he was so used to calling home now. Mahli was not a soldier, or a strong or particularly fierce wolf. Perhaps Lucid would not even want him in his ranks, and he would be left to wander. Perhaps that was better. All Mahli could really do was find things, things that were needed.
Slowly he found a way to bring himself, shaking, to his feet. Putting one paw in front of the other, he wobbled forwards, feeling nauseous but still pressing on. He lifted his head meekly, howling a little howl, and forced himself to run. He ran, quickly now, gathering speed until he caught a scent that was unfamiliar.
Lucid. And his alphess it seemed, and another wolf, of an odd scent. There was the fae Fiera-Lynn with them too, though he was not all that concerned with the other loner.
Whimpering unconsciously to himself, Mahli forced his paws moving in their general direction and before long he saw them. Here his 'gift' kicked in, knowing somewhat that he most certainly did not want or need to speak with either Lucid or his mate, and so his legs simply stopped. His rump thumped itself against the ground as his paws refused to take him any nearer. He whimpered like a pup, all too worried that he was too close and out in the open for them not to notice him. Still, he could do naught about it.
