At the bottom of his free fall Crow arched up, more daringly steep this time, catching the air skillfully with his experienced wings. He banked quicker than he ever had before, his form teetering in midair, threatening to loose its balance. As his glide steadied, he put his idea to the test. Reaching with his mind, Crow superheated the air beneath his wings. The moment he saw the waves of heat from the rising air, Crow stroked with his great strength.
His form rose, and continued rising even as he brought his wings up to stroke them down again. The heat of the air was so great that it gave him altitude even when he held his wings at their full expansion, only in a gliding position. Crow practiced manipulating his wings in different directions, testing the limit of his mobility. With the rising heat he could hover, moving directly up or down by the variations he created in temperature. By stroking his wings and monitoring the heat beneath them, he could fly forward, gaining momentum with every stroke. Crow couldn't help but smile, he was flying.
But he wiped the smile away as he whirled about, hovering high before Tola's snarling form. "I'm not running, Tola. I've got my own task at hand. One that you can't interfere with this time." She had never flown before, Crow knew that from the way she had watched him in the sky, she had never even attempted it before, and Crow doubted she had taken the time to carefully study the aerodynamics and mechanics of flight. Tola might try, but she wouldn't have the strength or the ability to follow him in the skies. Crow's eyes narrowed as he looked to her, he would earn his place as Father's heir.
Lowering quickly into a dive his black form propelled toward her, only pulling up inches from where she stood, a wave of heat rolling with the gust of air that blew into her flamed fur. Crow arched up for altitude and with steady wing strokes, turned his direction to the peak of the mountain.

Crow halted in mid-flight, monitering the warm air beneath his wings, leaving his form hovering in the air. His legs lay tucked beneath his chest and belly, but his neck and skull raised from their horizontal flight pattern to look about. Atop the highest peak, Father's peak, a golden light shown bright, brighter than any he had witnessed before. The light shimmered and sparkled over the entirety of the land, casting the canopies of the mountainsides in gold and each white mountain peak yellow with its reflection. As sudden as the odd light had grown bright, it faded quickly, leaving only its memory behind.
Crow's ears folded to his skull. What had that been? The light had come from the exact peak that he planned to fly to, to fly to to call to Father, to show him his flight, and finally his powers. But what did the light mean? Crow sniffed the air, smelling only its crisp chill. Should he continue? His tail swished behind him with indecision as he looked back to Tola, whom he had left on the cliff face, to see her reaction to the odd light.

Tola watched her brother fly. She grew instantly jealous and angered at the thought that he would actually beat her to something. She growled loudly and was glaring toward her brother when a golden light illuminated the entire terrain around them. She looked at the peak of the mountain curiously and tilted her head to one side. Unsure of what to make of this, she took a few pawsteps backward from the cliff edge and never took her eyes from the golden light.
After a few moments, the light disappeared and she remained motionless, staring at where it had been. She shook her head and looked to the peak again. The light had appeared and disappeared in a short amount of time.... and was something she had never witnessed before. She wasn't sure what to make of it, so she turned her glare back toward Crow, taking a few more pawsteps back. She flicked her tail and bared her teeth at her brother.

Crow, with a firm shake of his head, dismissed the light, and with it, dismissed Tola. Why he had turned to see her reaction he didn't know. Crow didn't care...he shouldn't care. He shouldn't care... He snarled, increasing the intensity of the heat below his great wings, raising his altitude and speeding forward with smooth, steady strokes.
He was the firstborn!
